Apigenin belongs to the class of flavonoids. It is one of the most common flavones in a balanced diet, found in many fruits and vegetables such as parsley, onions, orange, tea, chamomile, wheat germ, and some spices. Celery seeds also have a high concentration of apigenin. Flavonoids are a group of plant metabolites that have become more and more popular in recent years due to their antioxidant properties. These molecules are found in many fruits and vegetables where they perform several functions. Among other things, these are pigments necessary for the production of the colors needed to attract pollinating insects. In higher-order plants, flavonoids play an important role in UV filtration, nitrogen fixation, cell cycle inhibition and as chemical messengers. Antioxidants cover a wide spectrum of molecules that protect other chemicals from a process called oxidation , or oxidative stress. Oxidation can damage important parts of human cells, including DNA and other proteins responsible for many of the body's processes. Molecules such as DNA are needed for the proper functioning of cells. If too much is damaged, the cell may malfunction or even die. Therefore, antioxidants are important - they can prevent or reduce similar damage. In the body, uncontrolled oxidation is usually caused by highly reactive molecules called free radicals.
