Psyllium plantain is a common plant, the seeds of which produce large amounts of dietary fiber (mainly insoluble). Pharmacopoeia Polska III, issued in 1956, introduced this raw material to the set of herbal medicines. In practice, however, psyllium husks fiber did not receive the widespread dissemination and recognition it deserves in Poland. In the countries of south-western Europe, psyllium husks fiber is used in herbal medicine as a protective layer covering the mucous membranes of the digestive system. It is recommended there for the elderly, pregnant women and children. The mechanism of action of psyllium husks fiber is based on the swelling of its scales in the presence of water and the secretion of significant amounts of mucus by them. Experiments have shown that the mucus content in the husks is about 10-12%. Psyllium seed husks are a natural source of fiber (both soluble and insoluble). The presence of water allows them to increase their volume, which in turn stimulates intestinal peristalsis, and the slimy consistency facilitates the excretion of fecal masses.
