Flavonoids are a large group of polyphenolic compounds present in almost all fruits and vegetables. Citrus fruits accumulate particularly high amounts of flavonoids in the white parts called albedo, especially during immature stages, and are an excellent source for the industrial isolation of these compounds.
The flavonoid diosmin, present in some citrus plants and fruits, can be obtained from the flavonoid hesperidin, naturally found in the albedo portion of unripe sweet oranges. Phlebotonics based on diosmin, such as DiosVein ® , are composed of 96% diosmin and 4% other flavonoids expressed as hesperidin.
