Chinese cordyceps or Chinese cordyceps ( Cordyceps sinensis ) is a species of parasitic fungus. Unlike other beneficial Asian mushrooms, it does not grow on trees but occurs in the ground. Its main source of food are the moth larvae found there, which the cordyceps first attack, occupy and kill, and then draw from them the nutrients needed for development.
The natural habitat of cordyceps is the high mountains of Nepal and Tibet. Harsh climatic conditions and a clean environment make this mushroom rich in substances beneficial to the body, and its use in Asian systems of traditional medicine dates back hundreds of years.
The main active ingredients that are believed to have health-promoting properties of this mushroom are cordyceps acid, adenosine and cordycepin . Besides, similar to other mushrooms, cordyceps also contains polysaccharides .
